the thing is you can add a screen to the DragonBoard. Maybe FTC will be selling the DS with a plastic case and a screen....and the RS will just be plastic case around the DragonBoard.

True, but the PR also states: "The platform, which consists of handheld devices..."

This leads me to believe that the DS and RS are both handheld devices (ie. phone/tablet). The base DragonBoard I don't think is considered a "handheld device".

Hopefully someone with the definitive answer reads this thread and responds.

My belief is that the DS will be tablet-sized and the RS will be phone-sized, but I could be wrong.

I'd love to see an ODROID model used, at least as an alternative device. It's headless (no display), which is ideal for the robot end of things as it consumes less power. Multiple models, the cheaper could be used to get a team started, and the more expensive to use advanced libraries like OpenCV for more autonomous awesomeness. They also come with USB on-the-go support so they'd be compatible with sensor interfacing hardware.

    Hi Folks,

The details are being finalized so I cannot comment specifically on the device/devices that will be used. However, for the first season we will not be using a headless, single-board Android device. Instead, we will be using a handheld device (tablet or phone form factor) with a color touch screen, a USB OTG port, and support for WiFi Direct. The devices will have a built in camera and internal sensors (gyro/accel and GPS). The device will have a QualComm Snapdragon CPU.

    Hi NBABUCKS1 - I hope I didn't ruin the fun!

Note that we originally considered using some type of Snapdragon single board computer as the new device/controller. However, the use of a handheld has a lot of advantages (such as better ESD protection, built in touch screen, sensors, and camera, etc.) and we ultimately opted for the handheld format since it was a better value for our application.

    Hi folks....

Details are still being worked out, but I believe the device will be something similar to this....

Can't say much more for now!

Showing an Android device next to a fruity product is priceless.
